GERMAN GREEN STARTUP FACTORY PHASE II

Initiated by the German Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai, the project is located in the Kunshan German Industry Park (GIP) and will be the first pioneer Green factory project in China according to German energy efficient building standard. The concept of the partner plant is to provide production facilities for small and medium-sized German companies that are still building up their business in China. For those needs MUDI designed a flexible factory building with shared infrastructure facilities and an office floor where auxiliary functions and the secretariat are shared as well.

The lower parts of the building are occupied by factory usage. Here the main design idea was to create an open factory with the possibility to look in and out. A transparent factory wall stands for the high quality of the products leaving this facility.

The inner wall is divided vertically with a transparent part at the bottom and an opaque part at the top, which is constructed with lightweight hollow bricks that offer a decent U-value by their specifications. The bottom-glazed part is partly operable and acts as emergency exits and as well ensures natural ventilation during the spring and fall season. The exterior layer of the façade, with hollow white polycarbonate plates, is in 8cm distance to the inner layer and serves as sun and rain protection. A steel grid fixes them and parts of it can be open like flaps, so that in summer the warm air is able to circulate through this façade construction and the cooling load decreases. In winter the exterior part of the façade is closed, and the flaps do not waste the heat that the sun radiates to the façade, and it is used to lower the heating demand.
