A vibrant new commercial hub in the South of Xi’an
The proposed urbanism and architecture project is a master-planned development in Shaanxi Province, south of Xi’an, strategically positioned to leverage its rich natural and cultural setting. The site capitalizes on its proximity to a large working population from nearby factories, a university campus housing 60,000 students, and a steady influx of visitors drawn to the area’s stunning mountain vistas, hiking destinations, and cultural landmarks like local temples.
The master plan establishes a vibrant community focal point by creating a new neighborhood with a distinctive identity that reflects the region’s heritage. This design fosters a sense of pride and belonging among residents and visitors while integrating diverse building typologies into a cohesive and dynamic urban environment.
A central axis runs from the northern commercial plot to the southern sports-oriented areas with mountain views, efficiently connecting program elements. It provides a safe, car-free environment enriched with engaging activities, encouraging exploration and interaction.
.
Site 1 serves as the focal point and initial phase of the master plan’s redevelopment. This area currently consists of a collection of two- to three-story buildings organized in two linear rows, with smaller structures occupying the central corridor. This corridor fulfils multiple roles: it provides pedestrian and vehicular access to parking and serves as an emergency vehicle route.
Buildings and interspersed squares are composed to allow individual expression and character, tailored to specific functions and narratives. Two- to three-story buildings, arranged with simplicity and playfulness, establish a straightforward yet elegant architectural statement.
The redesign of Site 1 aims to transform this ensemble into a dynamic commercial district featuring a blend of food and beverage (F&B) outlets, retail spaces, and cultural facilities. The rooftop areas will be reimagined as extensions of commercial space, offering panoramic views of the southern mountains. The ground floor will be opened towards the street, the southern edge, and the internal road to create highly accessible commercial spaces adaptable over time.
A pedestrianized central axis will replace car traffic, forming a vibrant, outdoor-oriented urban space enriched with landscaping, sculp- tural elements, and terraces. These areas will invite visitors to dine, relax, and socialize, fostering a unique commercial and cultural experience.
